8/20/04

Day 7, Fri., 8/20 –
Wake up call @ 6:00a.m.. Nice breakfast buffet again. Dr. Paul provided butterfly bandages so re-did bandage. Looks good, hopefully little scaring.

Depart 7:30. Motorcoach to St. Moritz, with a stop in Innsbruck. Drive through east Bavaria, passed Lake Chemisee & back into Austria to Innsbruch. Rain & clouds entire way. Visited Swarovsky Crystal store...three floors and a lot of stuff, including elegant gowns worn by Shirley Bassy. Lunch in Innsbruch then on the bus to drive down Im Valley and cross the border into Switzerland. Switzerland isn't part of the European Union so border crossing can sometimes mean inspection etc. Drive through Engadin Valley to St. Moritz, in the Alps. Arrive St. Moritz early afternoon and went on carriage ride to view the Rosegg Glacier...a beautiful photo spot. Sunny but cold carriage ride. Hugh & I were behind the driver's seat so were out of the wind. The others were very cold and under the wool blankets provided. Dinner in Albana Hotel, an old and once-elegant hotel with mounted animals everywhere, also gun displays. We had a small room, baroque in decor. Flowers on closets and ceiling! Hotel halls were decorated with the owner's taxidermy, including bear, wolves, deer and many others on walls and ceiling. Our room was very small and had deep red floral fabric on the walls and ceiling. Unique and gaudy. A distinctly European experience. Overall, impression is that St. Moritz is very expensive. Everything was closed up in the evening so we could only window shop...that was enough to get a taste. Weren't able to spend quality time here.
There we got a tour of the Swarovsky Crystal store. Ate lunch at a coffee house across the street. We then continued on to the Engadine Valley where we took a carriage ride through beautiful mountain scenery to view the Rosegg Glacier. We then traveled by wagon back to St. Moritz in time for dinner at the hotel Albana.
