Day 8, Sat., 8/21 –
Our 39th wedding anniversary...spent in the Swiss Alps...what a spot...yes! Depart St. Moritz early. Beautiful bus ride over Julier Pass at 2284 meters (7,493 ft.). Tundra and fog much of the way. Took bus down mountain road through VERY narrow villages. Lucciano is a VERY good driver. Once at Disentis, ate lunch, shopped for food and supplies, then boarded the “Glacier Express” train for a 4-hour train ride through the most incredible Alpine scenery, across the Swiss Alps to Zermatt. Little villages were nestled on the mountainsides and beautiful waterfalls cascaded down the mountains along the way. The train was the only way to get to the mountain village of Zermatt, where no cars (only electric shuttle busses) are allowed. We stayed at the Pollux hotel...very nice. Peter and Carole had a view of the Matterhorn from their balcony on the back side. Hugh & I were on the front and from our second floor balcony, could look down on the street with all the hustle and bustle of excited tourists. Walked Main St. to the church square...very quaint with many shops, cafes and pubs. First view of the Matterhorn. Dinner at hotel (our anniversary dinner). After dinner, walked the street to see live band and have food and snacks. Tried hazlenut cookie and watched fondu cheese plates being made. Bed around 11:30...very noisy night with all the activity on the street below us.
