8/19/04

Day 6, Thurs., 8/19 –
Breakfast buffet at 7:00, then at 8:00 a walking tour of Salzburg directed by Barb, the local tour guide. Walked through Mirabel Gardens...very beautiful...flowers galore. Crossed the "Salt River" pedestrian bridge. Old Town - churches, square, shopping, 800's church, tea in courtyard cafe, glockenspiel, fortress, cable railway. Saw Mozart’s birthplace and later residence, as well as where he studied and wrote his music. Walked through St. Peter's cemetery...every plot was beautifully adorned with flowers and greenery. Very different looking than our own. Also saw the church and abbey used in the Sound of music, which was the actual one that Maria von Trapp had lived in and got married in.

Had time after the tour to walk around town and browse in the market place and shops.

Hugh & I spent the afternoon walking around Salzburg, taking many pictures. We took the cograil up to the fortress, high above the city. Peter and Carole did the tour of Eagle's nest which was one of Hitler’s getaway places. We were out walking from 8:00a.m. to 4:30p.m. So much to see...and we wanted to see it all.

That evening we took the bus to a farm where we were treated to a down-home Austrian farmhouse dinner, after a tour of the barn to see the animals. The farm house was adorned with the most beautiful flowers and we were amazed at how gorgeous it looked. Unfortunately, this is where Hugh bumped his head on a pipe in the barn, resulting in a couple of nasty cuts above his eye.

Beautiful weather today...about 80 degrees and sunny.
