Grumpy the Great Horned Owl 3345

Eastern Washington

While photographing Bohemian Waxwing’s the other day I took a side trip to check for owls and found this one. At first all I could see through my binoculars was suspicious looking tree bark, but closer examination revealed this owl and the one barely visible high and to the right. It was snowing hard, windy and very cold as I trudged through 2 feet of snow to get a closer look at this owl.

It was mid day so the owl was not all that active and would just slowly turn it’s head from side to side listening to different sounds. I had to make a really obnoxious rodent squeak sound to even get this guy to look my direction and then he appeared quite grumpy when he did. I immediately coined him “Grumpy” and surmise that perhaps the owl to the right is “Happy”.

Ok, so reference to the 7 dwarf's is a little cheesy, but it made me smile while I was out there freezing my tail-feathers off. : ))

Great catch! Amazing that you were able to see them against the bark.

Boy, did he give you "the eye" or what? Your photo's just amaze me! Beautiful work.
