Lewis' Woodpecker-2778

Idaho

Finally, a bird that sat still long enough, against a great background,
on a great perch, and everything came together.
At least in my opinion anyway.

Historic information provided to me by a friend, Rich McCrea:
It was first observed by Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition
on Sept. 20th 1805, somewhere along the Missouri River, east of Helena Montana
in the Big Belt Mountains. What is even more interesting (at least if you are
a Lewis & Clark Historian) is the fact that of all the zoological specimens that
L & C collected that perhaps the Lewis Woodpecker is the only one that survives
to this date, now in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University.
Thanks Rich!
