06/14/2009 - Whitman Fire/Rescue held the annual Fireman's Memorial Sunday at the Central Fire Station. All of the events were held at the firehouse due to inclement weather. The morning started with a breakfast at 0800 hours. Then there was an ecumenical service by Father Reed. A wreath was placed at the Memorial Bell and followed by remarks by L1769 Vice-President Scott Lynn. A second wreath was placed at the Memorial Bell by call-firefighters association president Paul Skarinka. A roll-call and tolling of the bell for deceased members followed. Awards were presented to several Whitman Firefighters for several different events. The Fire Service Awards were presented to FF Scott Lynn for his 30-years of service, FF James McGuiness for his 25-years of service and Chief Timothy Grenno for his 25-years of service. A citation of merit was given to Lieutenant Robert Hover, FF Jason Mahoney and FF Thomas Ford for their roll in a fatal house fire in May. FF Andrew McGillivray received a department citation for assisting a sick person on a flight that he was on. A civilian, Susan Green, was given a department citation for saving the lives of four young children in a fatal house fire earlier in May.
