What you've done here is wonderful! People need to know the reality for cats living on the streets. The homeless cat population can be reduced humanely but there will always be losses and it's our job to take some responsibility for that. If we just look the other way, overpopulation will only increase and more innocent cats and kittens will die :( I work with a local cat rescue group in Athens, Georgia, and we work mainly with feral and stray cats to spay/neuter and adopt out those who are tame enough to find homes. Unfortunately, we see the sad and often gruesome reality every day. Thank you for what you are doing!

I guess I am a bit nieve what is a "city" coyote? Loved the photos but makes me sad that I can not adopt them all. We have 1 from a shelter and three street walkers that arae now happy little house cats. Our male weighs in at about 22 pounds so maybe little isn't the correct term.

To 'Guest' . . thank you for your comment and for supporting the project . . . and more importantly for helping animals. It's important for people to know that some of these little 'street warriors' died, so people will get proactive in helping them. It's (sadly) their truth . . IMV people need to know 'truths'. Even if it's those that put a tear in your eye. Nothing much happens when people put their head in the sand. Look at Darfur etc. Man's inhumanity to man or animals etc needs to be brought out into the open for a solution. No one is more hurt by the deaths of these little ones then I, as they were my friends. Some people think only of 'kitties in a basket' . . that's not the only 'truth'.

I am the proud owner of 10 cats all spayed or neutered. All but 3 were shelter cats. I love your work. Howerever, I am conflicted as to whether I want to know if these cats died, because I just sit and cry. Thank-you for bringing this problem to light.I only found out about you 2 years ago, but have been a buyer of your calendars since then. Keep up the good work and maybe I won't cry when I read the captions, because all will have homes.

A friend sent this link to me because the photos were "cute". I of course read the captions and realized they were much more than just pictures. What you're doing is incredible. You mentioned looking for emotion rather than perfection in your photos. They definitely made me emotional. I've had several cats over the years; all but two were strays. I currently have 3 prior strays and feed a couple ferrals each night. The plight of homeless cats truly breaks my heart. Hopefully more and more people will take notice of your work and your message.

My Dear Anna, I knew there were many reasons that I liked you but I did not completely know why until now. I was unaware that you were a cat lover and involved with ferals. I have for years been taking in and rescuing the feral cats up here on the hill. I have personally kept 16 of them (s+n) and yearly trap and neuter another 8-10 and find homes or take to Greenhill as necessary. One summer I worked in the operating room of the Neutermobile fri-sat-sun for 6 weeks to do my community part so I could help a friend neuter his last 8 of 46, and do the rest of the precious little vagabonds in my neighborhood. I have some heart breaking photos of those little guys anesthetized with hugh frightened eyes. If we could only educate the public as to WHY they need to be responsible pet owners maybe we could save these precious little bundles of love and joy the pain and agony of starving to death and being hit by cars etc etc it would be a worthwhile mission. I just had the good fortune to review this book. All I will say is if you can read this book without shedding one tear, I fear for your humanity. I choose to live with these cats, socializing the older ones, the ones that "they" say cannot be reached. They can all be reached, you just have to offer them your love and understand their ways. MA

Your galleries is excellent really. I always believe that a place with feral cats and human will have kind people and love, although many of feral cats had/have/will have a bad ending. Tones of feral cats appeared after the outbreak of SARS and H5N1 avian influenza virus in Hong Kong, however, kind people always present to help (including desex) and feed those poor little guys.

Wonderful picture but I must say I see them with tears in my eyes. All these beautiful cats deserve loving homes and to be taken care for. To see a picture of a beautiful cat and read she has been run over on purpose is terrifying. Two of my cats have been strays that I took in. They have given me so much happiness. I hope many people will realize what a great companion a cat is. Thanks for sharing these pictures and stories. I hope your book is published soon!

These photos bring back such poignant feelings...having worked in an animal shelter for 15 years I have seen alot and felt alot...I left that work and thought I was numb. I see your photos and realize that the world over, the general public just doesn't "get" the tragic impact of not spaying and neutering thier kitties... I would love for none of these to say "dead" as the caption. My anger is rising so I had best get off my soapbox. Way to bring awareness, Knox.

Great gallery! There is also a population of alley cats in Chicago. I know the whole history of them. I tamed many and found homes for them. Eventually distemper swept through the area and they're all gone now for exept one longhaired black cat whom I see about ever four months. There are other alley cats in chicago, but in different neighborhoods, I only wish to help them, but unfortunatly it is hard to tame them when they dont live right outside my house. I bet that if you wrote a book about these alley cats and how hard the life is, it would be a best sellers, esspecially because of your amazing photos.

I feel soo bad for these lil guys, I wish i could just take them all to an island where they could run free and out of harms way. How do you get such powerfull images?? you are an amazing photographer. I give you a big round of applause for the work you do in getting the message out there. Hopefully one day we wont have this problem and everyone will spay/ neuter their cats and dogs and capture thoes who arent lucky enough to have a family who loves them and get them fixed also. thanks for the gallery, good luck in your future endevors, you deserve evry good thing that comes your way!

Oh my, this gallery says it all. I'm happy to see that some of the alley cats have been fixed and now have homes. Bless you for the work you are doing in bringing the plight of the alley cats out for all to see. Feral cats have such short and lonely lives. We can only hope that more folks will see this gallery and think twice about getting their cats neutered.

I disagree . . . this site has been one of the popular sites on pbase for a long time. I certainly don't think it's ONLY due to the photography, but support of the content. I have recieved many orders for the book as well as private emails from many pbase viewers giving support and sharing their personal stories of feral recovery work. MOST do this work anonymously and not post their 'wonderfulness' for all to see. (anonymously is the humble way) I would say hyperbole (your "99%" comment) sells these people extremely short. Many of the viewers have shared their own feral recovery organizations with me. I have been pretty impressed with those that have come here and I refuse to sell them short. Just because you may not see their passionate views on feral recovery with their one or two word 'comments' posted here . . . I'm aware that many do indeed 'get it'. I see you are passionate about the problem as well. In no way am I defending my gallery or the reason I am doing this, though it should be clear . . though I will defend some I have met through this gallery and the work they are doing.

You obviously don't 'get' the point behind this book project. The whole point is not to "glorify" anything, but bring attention to the problem that faces ferals so people will become pro-active. The Humane Society is behind this book, and we support organizations who do work to help the alleycats . . . . Where you 'got' that I was glorifying the alley cats suffering from these photos is beyond me. I try to show that they too love, play, and hurt just like us and that they don't deserve to live this way . . . . . AND to tell people to spay and neuter their cats.

The fact that this gallery exists is a tragedy. These pictures are not sweet. Life for a stray is not pleasant. The pictures are very well done. But I would only use these pictures to highlight the short, torturous life these cats have, not to glorify some independent, perfect society they have created. Strays and feral colonies exist because of ignorant, uncaring people. I was moved by these photos, but only because I realize what a tragedy it is. There's no romanticism in this, despite what the captions might tell you.

I've visited your street cats last week but felt kind of longing to see them again. They are so cute, so vivid, thanks to your sensitiveness and compassionte eyes. The photos are wonderful, sad, funny, poignant...I want to take them ALL home! May I suggest that you make the background color of your website a different color than black/dark gray...for me at least, it make the pictures a bit harder to see (let alone the comments posted)...especially since many of the pictures are a bit dark themselves.
