These shots represent my multi-year attempt to photograph
the moon rising over the Wisconsin Capitol in Madison. These shots are not photoshopped fakes, nor are they the result of the "moon illusion" where the moon appears to be larger in the sky when it's near the horizon (it doesn't). The exaggerated size of the moon relative to the capitol is due to my distance from the capitol dome, and my use of a very long telephoto lens. My preferred location
is on the west shore of Lake Mendota about four miles from the capitol dome.
Catching a moon rise in the immediate vicinity of the dome can be calculated
with the help of astronomy software, and as a result, I journey there about
3 or 4 times a year to catch the action. I'm still hoping for the definitive
"moon directly behind the dome" shot, but it has thus far eluded me.
Maybe this year.
