Like Renee Cottrell, I have several growing around my house as well. My husband and I have dug at several sites that we have owned and formed a "catch-all" hold-over bed. Last year they started to bloom. I looked for a "Meadow Lily", but could not find one. The ones that I have are in beds near my house and beside a pond in my side yard, but not near running water. Mr. Adams, do you have a picture of a Meadow Lily?

I photographed the "cahaba lily" on The Cahaba River near my hometown in West Blocton, Alabama, which according to Dr. Davenport of Sanford University, is the largest stand of the true lily. It has several cousins that live under very different conditions than the those of The Cahaba River. I'm happy to share photos if you request one from me - skvbrevity@aol.com --

The world's largest population is found at Landsford Canal State Park in SC growing in the Catawba River - in SC we call it Rocky Shoals Spider Lily. Mark Dutton

Cottrell's plant is a Meadow Lily--a relative of the Cahaba Lily. The latter would not survive in the habatat she describes.

Nice pics. I am from Louisiana. I recently bought a farm and last year had two of the Cahaba Lillies bloom in a flower bed that had been established by the former owner. The flower bed is around an oak tree where there is no running water. I did not have a clue what kind of flower it was at first so I took a picture and someone had seen an article about the Cahaba lilies and told me about them. I thought it was rather cool to have such a rare find in my back yard.

Very pretty pictures, I just really discovered what a Cahaba Lilly is. In the Law office I work for they have a sculpture of wood Cahaba Lilies
