25-NOV-2007 Helen Betts

8th Place
Shades of IM Pei

by Helen Betts

Washington, D.C.

Part of the glass ceiling at the National Gallery, East Wing. I can't even begin to describe how much trouble this ended up being, from the guard with whom I had a fight because he insisted my leather purse was a backpack and couldn't be worn as such, to trying to get an adequate capture of the ceiling in the quickly disappearing light, to processing the images because of the lens distortion, line distortion and multicolor, multi-tone fringing. What a nightmare :-). Anyway, this was the one I came up with.

Sony DSC-H5
1/25s f/4.5 at 8.0mm iso100 full exif

Aren't those guards a pain in the rump!!! Persistence pays! The symmetry here works wonderfully! John

Wonderful composition - I love all the angles and shapes, and especially the sharp, thin lines!

Helen, your work never ceases to amaze me. This image is spectacular and you've treated the lens distortion perfectly. I love this image. Dale

Very nice pattern here - the triangular composition adds visual interest, and the way the lines in the center all point up, with the lines at the little upside-down triangle in the middle pointing horizontally, really enhances this. I like the color difference of the white center section!

Helen, your difficult shoots always turn out such fabulous images!! This one is stunning. Your post processing sounds like the big nightmare to me. I would not know where to begin dealing with everything you described!!
