10-SEP-2006 Wojtas

5th: Kayan woman
by Wojtas

"Long neck village", Thailand

I took this shot on a 3-day scooter trip around Chiang Mai, Thailand. I visited so called "long neck village" near Myanmar (Burman) border. Female members of the Kayan tribe wear brass coils around their necks from the age of 7. This results in deformation of their chests, which makes their necks appear unusually long. The neck, the colors, her look, the guitar and (of course) memories the shot revokes - it all makes this particular picture my personal favourite of all taken last year.

That transfixed me. In my mind it sits alongside some of my favourite National Geographic Magazine pictures. Glyn Powell.

Wonderful capture - I love the colors, and the expression on her face!

Wow, this is such an interesting portrait...of a woman and of a culture. Beautiful colors and very well taken, Wojtas. MFC

I agree with John... this mage is surreal. Hard to imagine someone deforming themselves like this in the name of some misgiuded concept of beauty. Very well captured, though and great colors.

Portait of an alien playing on a guitare... Very unusual, I feel a kind a tension between the arifically deformed human body and the vivid colors. remarkable shot, no question. MCsaba

Her head looks like it was pasted in from a different photo. Very natural and surreal at the same time. jrdu

Amazing! Great colors, composition, lighting, expression & above all, of course, subject. Just about takes my breath away.
