Thank you both. I cropped off the top as you suggested Helen. Gaurav, I honestly don't know what causes the colors. I probably could have found out, but I was just on a quick day trip down to Yellowstone, and wasn't spending much time anywhere. I was especially fascinated by the brilliant green color, and took lots of photos of just that. --Melanie

Are those a copper and iron being leached? very interesting...
Nice capture of a very interesting formation, Melanie. Great combination of colors as well. Personally, I would have cropped the very top off because although it does give some perspective, I find it distracting from the subject. (But I always like things symmetrical and simple :-). Helen
