Christ Church Episcopal, Alexandria, Virginia

Construction on this mid-eighteenth century Georgian style church began in Alexandria in 1767 and was completed in 1773. The church has held services continually since its founding. Several modifications to the church were made over the years but the building was restored in the 1890s consistent with the original Georgian details. Worshipers have included the Washington, Mason, Lee, and Ramsay families. Tradition has it that in was in the churchyard that George Washington announced to his friends his intentions of fighting for American independence. Most U.S. Presidents have made it a tradition to participate in services at the church, and it was here that Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill participated in a prayer service for peace during World War II.

Hello - can you tell me if the actress Mrs Anne Warren nee Brunton has a memorial in the churchyard, please? She died in 1808 and the critic William Winter wrote in 1893 about her 'conspicuous' memorial stone. I should be most grateful if you were able to give me a 'yes' or 'no' on this.

Judging from this photo, if you were to be facing in the direction shown with the altar to your right, the Washington family box would be to your left and behind you just a bit, up against the left wall of the church. It is very close to this corner; in fact, the pews in your photo are only separated from the box by several feet. And unlike a single-row pew, the Washington box is designed with a bench on each of three sides and the gate on the fourth. Not being an architect (or, for that matter, good with highway directions), I wish I could give you a better idea of where it is. I will say that if you go back at some point, the box has a silver plate attached with a facsimile of his signature (the Robert E. Lee pew has a silver plate as well).

Hope this is somewhat helpful; if I can ever find a good floorplan that's e-mailable, I'll give you a heads up.

Matt, the caption states that his family pew was located in this area--it didn't identify which particular pew was his. Please let me know if in fact the family pew was not located in this corner. Thank you for your comments on the photos. One of your church's volunteer docents was very kind to show me around.

These are great photos; I'm a member of the church, so I get to enjoy all of these views quite often. A slight correction, though -- the photo that you have labeled as the Washington family pew is not actually their pew. President Washington actually bought a box pew, which is located several rows back from the one you have pictured here. Hope that's helpful.
