SGM E. W. Stevenson - Vietnam, 1965

These few pictures of my father were sent to my mother in early 1966. He was 39 years old at the time.

They were taken by one of his fellow soldiers... I have no idea where or how they were developed. I have done little or nothing to enhance the scanned images; somehow the ghosts that showed up on some of the images and the tilt of others on the paper seem a part of the history.

Dad had put notes on the back of a few of the prints. I included his words as captions.

SGM E. W. Stevenson died of pneumonia at Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, NC on 17-Mar-1994 at age 68. He is missed.

Gary, I know that you are proud of your father's service, and rightly so. I see that he was an Airborne trooper. This is a great gallery of photos, very much like a time capsule. Thank you for sharing them with us. Dave Berry 2/28th Infantry '67-'68

Wow! Great pictures. Thanks for posting. I served in 1969. I was in junior high school when your dad was there. But much of it looks the same.

Dad never said anything about sitting on his helmet, but I remember him talking about washing out of it or even cooking in it,as the steel "pot" was a separate piece from the liner which contained support and size adjustment bands. As a kid, my buddies and I played Army a lot; I had a liner I would sometimes wear but the steel pot was way too heavy.

Thanks for showing your photos. I notice SGM E.W. Stevenson in p01 wearing his helmet, the history books, (I was ten years old at the time) seem to say that soldiers sat on them, (or did that come later on?), for protection from small arms fire from the ground. For the historical content I have voted for this gallery.
