New photos and stories coming soon..

An ongoing project I am taking on and have been working on for 3 years now. Documenting the homeless in Phx, AZ. Not only am I documenting them, I am hearing their stories, helping them and talking with them. I am not zooming in on them with a 300mm lens, but rather am being up close and pesonal with just my 50mm.

The Homeless population across the country is nearly epidemic. While many think these are just "bums" who drink and use drugs, it is a hard life or misfortune that has led them to this. Many if not mostly all drink, only a few I have come across use drugs. They have lost everything and have once led normal lives, living in normal homes and many even have children. A bout of bad luck has forced many to live on the street with no one to help. Many die on the street as well. Whenever I see a homeless person I talk to them if possible and many have a kind gracious heart and I just wish I could do more to help.

With the times in 2008-2009 becoming harder for many people due to the housing mortgage crisis and the bad economy there may soon be many more people forced to be without a home.

Again, I thank ALL of you who have responded. It is amazing to me how many comments this gallery has had. The REALLY cool thing is, there have been no negative comments and to me, that is just incredible. When I put these up, I imagined a bunch of A-Holes posting rude remarks or making rotten remarks. I have been pleasantly surprised and I appreciate every single comment that has been posted here. I have not been able to shoot as much these past few months as I have temporarily moved to a new state in a small town and while I am happy to see this problem does not exist here, I do know it exists in most of the big cities in the USA. I will be visiting Chicago a few times in the next few months and will be shooting there. More portraits and stories are coming. Thanks for looking. Steve

Very powerful photographs. Reminds me of the B&W photos from the Farm Security Administration, espically Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother". I'm a VA psychiatric nurse and care for some homeless vets that look like some of your images. Seattle is no stranger to the homeless. At this point I have resisted photographing the homeless because I don't know how ethical it is for me. I am starting to take street photos with the LX3 and may come to a conclusion. I also have to decide whether I will give them any money to capturing their image because I don't do that for presumably non-homeless people.

This is a very powerful gallery. I'm afraid with the world situation, there will be many more people on the streets. I don't know what the answer is. It entails so much more than feeding the homeless on holidays. Many are mentally ill, alcoholic or on drugs. How do you combat this and turn life around for them? Or do we just accept it and go on, helping when we can. I very much like your approach and appreciate the stories you have shared. No one should have to live like this. V!

Dear Steve, What a humbling experience it was coming across your gallery. It is moving and powerful as many have already said. I also find you quite brave: Most people (including myself) would be worried about getting attacked or stabbed with a syringe when approaching some of the guys you have chosen to approach. We don't have any homeless where I live really and the ignorant percepion I have is that most of the homeless, although many eminate from sad backgrounds, are alcoholics or addicts prone to volatile behaviour. Reading your gallery though has actually changed my perception quite a lot and that is why I think it is so powerful. It simply made me think. Next time i see a homeless person - i will see if i can pluck up the courage to say Hi and converse a little, instead of rushing past pretending to look the other way as if I have not noticed anyone. Thanks for the wake-up call. I wish you the very best of luck with your project and hope it grows and grows with other photographers joining in and hopefully collectively making a bit of a difference. I think that your project is awesome! I am Miranda, the subject of the post below is my mother Joyce. I have photos of her and would like to get them out, in hopes of finding and bringing her home. There is no reason for my mother to be homeless, however Alcoholism got the best of her. She is also mentally ill. I would appreciate any interactions from anyone who may be able to assist me in finding her. If I could, I would come down to Phoenix on my to try and locate her, however, I have three small children and a husband here to take care of. The economy has got us in a bind like the rest and I can not afford a cross country trip! God Bless you for this beautiful site! May the Lord be with you...

Patterson, left her home in Ohio in 1996 to go to Arizona with some people who promised to help her get well (from alcoholism). I have not seen her since she left. She is mentally ill and needs help. I found police reports on her in the public records search and they have her listed as a transient. I am trying to search for or find anyone who may have seen my mother in a shelter or anywhere else. There is a homeless shelter two blocks from where I live. A commercial building 1/2 block from the shelter has been made into expensive condos. So you know the shelter was asked to move. Where are those people going to go? I walk by there every day, and they don't bother me nor anyone else. They're just down on their luck. When I look at them, I think 'There but for the grace of G-d go I.'

I love your pictures. I think that what you are doing is awesome. My family is going through a tough time financially and I am so afraid that we will end up homeless. It has been such a struggle. I have been keeping an online diary about what has been going on and hoping that people will help us before we end up on a website like yours. I feel for those people. I believe that the majority of homeless people are people like me and my family that had financial difficulties that they were not able to recover from. This is a sad documentary on America (and other countries, I am sure) and its terrible lack of support for those devastated by mental illness and drug use. It has been estimated that at least 80% of those chronically homeless people are suffering from mental illness - with very little hope for any real solution to their problem. Our government simply can't be bothered - it seems we would rather spend billions killing people in some foreign country. I can't stand Bush - or his oil buddies.

Steve, Great pictures! I need to tell you, the social programs in the Valley of the Sun - Suck! I am working on starting my own "fund" - "The Homeless Fund"....I want to be able to actually sponsor these people if the pass screening & eval - to put them in a motel, get some new clothes for them, help them find a job & so forth. I have a non-profit organization where I provide supportive services to homeless individuals in southern California. We feed hot meals and provide clean clothes for the homeless on the streets. We put together a CD that we show to churches in hopes of getting financial support to continue to help the homeless who want a hand up and not a hand out. Thank you for all you do. It is a great thing you are doing here, Steve. I hope this becomes a long time project. Although homelessness seems to be a complex problem, our society should be ashamed to have any people on the street at all, with all the money that is spent sensessly on other issues. Coming from a european country where there was not such thing, I am still shocked every time I encounter homlessness, especially when it is due to mental illness.

In a world where there is such a divide, between those who have and the "have nots", it is important to remember that we are human beings, who want to be heard and valued.It is sad to that "homelessness" is a shared challenge in many societies and your project can only heighten that awareness.

Man! you are doing something that the well suited people keep talking for ages without give a dime to them but getting a house or two in Beverley Hills. What a shame! This is real life, all the politicians are should be shame of it! Thanks Steve, you showing us the true value of being a human.
