The Afro-Colombian communities that lie in the low mountains beyond the river town of San Marino have been hit very hard by the armed conflict. The military and police prevent people from circulating freely, and from fishing and farming as they are used to. They also prevent people from bringing adequate food and supplies up to the villages. Meanwhile, guerrilla forces engage the military and make movement difficult and dangerous for the people.

In the village of Piedra Honda, where most of these pictures were made, the people try to organize themselves to provide basic services and resist pressures from the armed groups; in this community organizing work they, like the Embera people of the more remote Aguasal area, get important, even critical support from the Diocese of Quibdó.


Las comunidades afro-colombianas que quedan más allá del pueblo ribereño de San Marino han sido muy golpeadas por el conflicto armado. Los militares y los policías no dejan que la gente se movilice libremente, que pesquen y trabajen sus fincas, como suelen hacer. Mientras tanto, la guerrilla enfrenta los militares y hacen que el movimiento sea difícil y peligroso para la gente.

En el pequeño pueblo de Piedra Honda , donde saqué la mayoría de estas fotos, la gente intenta organizarse para proveer servicios básicos y resistir las presiones de los grupos armados; en esta tarea de organización comunitaria ellos, igual que la gente embera de la zona más remota de Aguasal, cuentan con el apoyo importante, y hasta imprescindible , de la Diócesis de Quibdó.
