The Spanish conquistadores went up the Atrato looking for gold in the 16th Century, and they found it. Gold was taken from major mines until the 1960s. The damage to the surrounding land, the water basins and the rivers was very great. Today, backhoes are used to look for gold. This activity takes wealth away from the area, while it leaves behind swathes of destruction in the forest.
In siglo XVI, los conquistadores españoles subieron el åtrato buscando el oro, y lo encontraron. El oro fue sacado de las minas mayores hasta los años de los 1960. Dejó unos daños tremendos a las tierras vecinas, las cuencas y los ríos. Hoy en día se emplean los retroexcavadores en la busqueda del oro. Esta actividad saca la riqueza de la zona, dejando atrás áreas despejadas y destruidas en el bosque.
