Guayabal is a village close to Quibdó, the capital of the Department of Chocó. The name suggests that there should be guava trees there, but they’re long gone. Like many villages in Chocó, Guayabal has fallen on hard economic times. In part this is due to the effects of the armed conflict. But here you can also see the long-term effects of gold and platinum mining. The mining companies came in, extracted the ore, and left behind polluted streams and damaged forest and soil, and unemployment. There is still small-scale foresting, but the companies bring the workers in on trucks, so the residents don’t benefit. The people of the town subsist from panning for gold in the streams, a little fishing and hunting and informal agriculture, and searching for work in the informal economy in Quibdó.

Guayabal es un pueblo cerca a Quibdó, la cabecera departamental de Chocó. A pesar del nombre, hace mucho que no se ven palos de guayaba. Como a muchos pueblos chocoanos, a Guayabal le ha tocado un período económico muy duro. En parte esto se debe a los efectos del conflicto armado. Mas por aquí también se puede ver los efectos de largo plazo de las minas de oro y platino. Las compañías mineras vinieron, sacaron el metal, y dejaron atrás ríos contaminados y suelos y bosques dañados, y la cesantía. Todavía hay extracción de madera, pero las empresas traen los trabajadores en sus camiones, y los habitantes no son beneficiados. Los pobladores subsisten en “minear” los ríos por oro, en un poco de caza y pesca y siembra informal, y en el “rebusque” de trabajo en la economía informal en Quibdó.
