We live in an older suburb of Cleveland, OH, right near the city. We have a small front yard, and a somewhat larger back yard. In the past we managed to eliminate most of the grass by planting perennial flowers in the front and a large, wild, vegetable garden in the back. In recent years, as we have become increasingly connected to the natural environment in northern Ohio, we have started to convert both back and front into native plant gardens, hoping to turn our lot into a sort of mini wildlife refuge. This applies to flowers, shrubs and trees. Even the fish in our new small pond are native shiners, not exotic carp. We’re not there yet; this is a lengthy and costly process. Some of the exotic plants are hard to replace because they’re so beautiful or because we have sentimental attachments to them. Sometimes we acquire a native and later find that it’s a cultivar, and we don’t necessarily replace them. Still, the process is under way; at least everything new that we put in is a native plant. Vivimos en uno de los suburbios más viejos de Cleveland, Ohio (EEUU), muy cerca al casco urbano. Tenemos un patio delantero pequeño, y un patio trasero un poco más grande. Antes, logramos quitarles la mayor parte de la hierba sembrando flores perennes delante y un huerto familiar de verduras grande y medio selvático atrás. En los últimos años, como nos hemos venido sintiendo más vinculados al ambiente natural en la zona norteña del estado de Ohio, hemos empezado a convertir los patios, tanto delantero como trasero, en jardines de plantas nativas, esperando convertir la parcelita en una clase de mini refugio de vida silvestre. Se trata de las flores, los arbustos y los árboles. Hasta los peces en nuestra nueva y pequeña charca son nativos—“shiners”—y no carpas exóticas. No hemos terminado todavía; es un proceso largo y costoso. Algunos de las matas nos está costando trabajo remplazar porque son tan bellas o por nostalgia por ellas. A veces conseguimos una planta nativa y luego nos damos cuenta que es cultivada; y ellas no siempre las remplazamos.
