I am convinced by the work of some Colombian historians that the farthest reaches of the Upper Río Andágueda were settled by Embera people fleeing from the conquering Spanish in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Later, their traditional culture and social organization were intentionally changed—though they could not be eliminated—by missionaries in the mid-20th Century.

Today, the Embera people of the Upper Andágueda continue to live in very isolated communities in a beautiful natural setting. Unfortunately, they have been affected by the armed conflict, which disrupts their daily lives and clouds their futures.


Quedo convencido por el trabajo de unos historiadores colombianos que la zona más remota del Alto Andágueda fue poblada por gente embera que huían de los conquistadores españoles en Siglos XVI y XVII. Luego, su cultura y organización social fueron cambiadas a propósito—aunque no podían acabar con ellas—por misionarios en medianos del Siglo XX.

Hoy la gente embera del Alto Andágueda siguen viviendo en comunidades muy aisladas en un contorno natural bello. Desafortunadamente, han sido afectados por el conflicto armado, que hace estragos en su vida cotidiana y hace incierto su porvenir.
