This project was operaated by Phare Ponleu Selpak (www.phareps.org), the Cambodian organization that ran the project of Education and HIV/AIDS on the Cambodian Train: http://www.pbase.com/stephanejanin/phare_ponleu_selpak__the_train_february_2006. I followed this theater group from Phare Ponleu Selpak in one of the eight garment factories there were performing their educationnal theater. Garment industry is the leading industry in Cambodia, representing more than 300 000 young workers, mostly young women coming from the countryside. These young women usually have a low education, especially when it comes to sexual diseases and protection against them. The theater group of Phare Ponleu Selpak arrives a bit before 11am to be ready for the worker’s lunch break, no more than an hour. When workers have finished their lunch, the theater group performs two short 10 minutes stories. Between the two shows and after, a woman working for WDA (Woman Development Association) provides the workers with knowledge, advices, leaflets and condoms, answers to their questions and promote a free hotline phone number on Sexual Health.
