here is a closer view of #1 CC [on the left] and #2 CC.
The dark spots in the otherwise shiny rings around the combustion chambers show where the coolant was getting past the fire rings.
The worst spot on the head gasket...where the fire ring had actually cracked...can be seen at 11 o'clock on #1 CC: right there at the coolant passage.
There was not enough metal over the head gasket/fire ring to clamp it/support it/hold it in place to prevent it from failing.
If you look closely at the side of the combustion chamber around 9 o'clock, you can see a curved line. That is where the fire ring started out being located, when it was round. After the fire ring cracked and failed, the fire ring started to egg out away from the combustion chamber in that area.
