the pistons are in:

here is a view of the deck after all pistons/rods are installed.

at teardown, the deck height was measured at plus 0.004in....meaning that the squish clearance of the motor as it was was 0.043in; just outside the good squish range.
I wanted to tighten up the squish to under 0.040in....meaning that I would want the shortblock to end up with the deck height of the pistons to be higher than a plus 0.007in.

since the rods were resized, and the main bearings were line honed, the deck height had to be measured after the other machining operations were completed in order to be able to accurately determine how much, if any material would need to be milled from the block deck surface in order to end up with a deck height of plus 0.010in.

The block deck was examined and measured to see if any milling was essential for flatness; the deck was quite serviceable as is.

When the deck height was measured after the rod resize and main bearing line bore, the deck height was determined to be plus 0.010in: no block deck milling would be needed to achieve the desired deck height. I would have my tight squish.

stock headgasket compressed thickness is 0.047in; deck height is plus 0.010in: squish clearance will be 0.037in. Just what I wanted. As Curly would say: "poifect!"
