Pope John Paul II visit to Iowa - a commemoration print

On a beautiful autumn day in October of 1979, more than 300,000 people gathered on a hillside at Living History Farms in suburban Des Moines, IA, to be a part of history and participate in a mass officiated by Pope John Paul II. In honor of the pope's historic visit, the Church of the Land was built in 1984 on the ground where he stood. On the day of the pope's funeral in April 2005, Iowa landscape photographer Stan Richard felt compelled to return to the land where the pope once visited 25 years earlier and he captured this idyllic setting in a photograph he has titled "Land of the gathering".

This image awarded "First Place" in the Iowa Places category at the 2005 Iowa State Fair Photography Salon.
