"The County" as it is locally called, is one of the most picturesque areas in Ontario. It is a large island close to the north shore at the east end of Lake Ontario, about two hours drive from Toronto. We recently spent a few lovely days with friends who live in Picton, the largest town. The County has great scenery, a host of wineries, artists and artisans and because of all the reaches and bays, some of the best sailing in southern Ontario. It has a long history, being the settling place for many United Empire Loyalists who left the United States at the time of the American Revolution. It also played a part in the "Underground Railroad" as a destination for slaves from the U.S. escaping to Canada to find freedom.
