The bridge and Stare Mesto in evening light

The western end of the bridge, early in the morning
Very early. Before breakfast in fact. All self-respecting tourists are still sleeping out their hangovers. The sacrifices one must make for Art... More seriously though, if you want to get photos of the statues lining the south side of the bridge, early morning in June/July is perhaps the best time to do it. The sun is at the back of the statues the rest of the day, but in morning the light shines on the front of them.

A more typical scenario, the bridge absolutely crowded with tourists
The worst part about being a tourist in Prague is all the bloody tourists in Prague...

Jazz band entertaining
These guys were pumping away at their instruments in the sun, in 30 degrees Centigrade. Me, I went for a beer immediately afterwards...

Statue and sales-stands
Both sides of the bridge are lined with buskers and small sales stands peddling merchandise to the unsuspecting tourist. You can also have your portrait drawn in 5 minutes of course.

Statue detail
This statue has a small lantern hanging from it, for no apparent reason.

Statue of St John Nepomuk
Apparently it is good luck to touch the right-hand bronze plaque, showing the saint being chucked into the river. A lot of people seem to have misunderstood this and touch the left-hand plaque instead, showing a soldier with a dog!

Statue on the bridge
A fair degree of patience is required for this kind of shot. You have to be prepared to wait a few minutes until an opening offers up in cattle-horde of tourists streaming by, then snap two-three photos before more people stampede through your field of view!
