Khorat is a town about four hours or so north of Bangkok, in Issa state. It's sort of a nothing town, but convenient, I thought, for a couple of Khmer ruin towns. And it is fairly nice. There is a nice sort of square with fountains and a great memorial to some female warriors who, at some point in history, saved the area from marauding Lao armies. Hard as it is to imagine marauding Lao. But there is good food, interesting bars, and fairly cheap hotels. But, I would also say that if you are more interested in seeing the Khmer ruin, Phimai has some nice-looking guesthouses. It's a much smaller town.
