This was a strange leg of my trip. I needed to break up the busride from Bijapur to Pune and so I looked at LP and it said this city, Kolhapur, was a major pilgrimage site and a "forgotten backwood." So imagine my surprise to arrive in one of the most modern, clean, quiet cities I've ever seen in India. I don't believe the person who wrote the bit about Kolhapur has EVER been there. It was a nice town, but not at all what the book claims. This shouldn't surprise me, but it did. LP is routinely way off about sites, but to get a city so completely wrong is a bit shocking.
Nice apartment block
This was one of the most tastefully designed apt. blocks i've seen in india
Down by the big temple
Gate leading to old town
The Maharaja of Kolhapur is quite rich. This is his new palace.
I asked someone why he is so rich. He said, "too much land."
It was a nice palace. No photos allowed inside
A flower
The Maharaja himself
A painting of an old Maharaja -- this from the Old Palace, now a hotel. I had lunch there.
Hello, Nice pictures. Brings back a lot of memories since i am from the same place. Just a small correction. The place where you had lunch or the palace next to the lake is called as Shalini Palace which is converted to a hotel now a days, and not Old Palace. The Old Palace is in the heart of city, the picture which says "Gate leading to old town".
