Went to West Bengal for Durga Puja this year. Spent a few days in Kolkata, but was quickly put off by the crowds and noise and hassles, so, after an aborted attempt to fly to Patna during the landfall of the largest cyclone to hit India in a century, I took a bus to Bishnupur, famous for its "terra cotta" temples -- If you're like me, you are imagining clay or, you know, something other than bricks. But they are made of bricks. Why they aren't just called "brick temples" i don't know, but this semantic issue is really neither here nor there. Bishnupur was epic. A truly great Indian temple town. Loads of Indian tourists, but no other foreigners. Well, maybe one or two. But it was a ton of fun to wander around town to see all the temples, only two or three of which are really nice. But it's beautiful countryside filled with very friendly people.
