Macaria sp. bisignata? (Red-headed Inchworm)

Millis MA

Collected 10/9/2008 from a very productive White Pine outside Uncle Ned's Fish Factory in Millis MA. I believe this to be M. bisignata due to the lack of any powdery luster dorsaly and because of the significant reddish pigmentation on the lobes of the head.

A troublesome group of caterpillars. The basic build and colorstion appears more sloppy overall than other Macaria I have collected. The head is rich with red spots and occelations, the spiracular stripe is often muddied with yellow. Also, the degree of white dusting is restricted. Who knows?
