American Sonex Association 2011 Fly-In

American Sonex Association Fly In

Last weekend we held the 8th annual American Sonex Association Fly in at the Crossville, TN airport. CSV. We had another great turnout. Starting on Friday at noon we had 24 aircraft on the field and another 2 came on Saturday Morning for a total of 26 with 149 registered attendees. We did not beat last years record of 29 but it was an excellent showing.

Saturday morning we started giving rides but before we could get fired up 3 aircraft had to make a hasty departure because of impending weather problems that would keep them from getting home on Sunday and they all had commitments that required them to be home. This Cut about 50% of ride seats so we were not able to give rides to all of the folks that came and wanted a ride. We were sorry that they came all the way to Crossville and we could not get them a ride but Dave Story flew 10 rides, Wayne Andrews flew 5, Bob Frost flew 3, Bob Bible flew 2 and John Murr and Mark Huebbe each flew 1, for a total of 22 rides. This total did include the rides that were given to the CAP cadets that came from the Summner County Squadron commanded by Robert Bandy. They worked for 2 days making sure that the event was a safe one for every one by helping marshal aircraft in and out of the display area. Great young men.

This year for the first time we had a Xenos flown by Ted and Nanci Stanton from Athens GA. It was the centerpiece of the ramp display and a really fun bird to move around and get tied down at night. Ted gave a great electrical presentation and that was followed a discussion of smoke systems and canopy/cowl fitting tips.

We then had a outstanding and very well put presentation by Peter Van Schalkwyk and Michael Crowder explaining the trials and tribulations of putting together a flying fuel injected Aerovee and Jabiru 3300 engine in the Sonex airframe. There seem to be a great deal of interest and the presentation generated a fair amount of questions.

The weekend was capped off by the traditional Big Boys BBQ pulled pork dinner with all of the fixins. The award for the longest distance was presented to Wayne Daniels and Sunday morning we found out the it should hav gone to John Murr, he had Wayne by 2.7 miles. Oh well John will have to come back next year to get his prize (sorry John UPS does not run up to where you live). The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the door prizes that had been so graciously provided by
