Canis latrans

American Coyote

Mr. Coyote enjoys the quiet of the winter zoo. Here,
he waits for his turn with the animal behaviorist.
He earns treats for responding to audible and visual
signals that are part of his health and enrichment program.

He his a favorite among the zoo workers. He's attained the
very ripe age for a coyote of 11. He's also quite large, more
than 50 pounds (22.68 kilos), and with the most magnificent
coat I've ever seen on a coyote.

Update: This coyote was taken in as a pup by a family that
thought they had found an abandoned little dog. Many months
of loving care, including regular trips to the vet, ensued.
Eventually the vet realized that there was something funny
about this dog...namely that it wasn't one. Sadly the family
parted with their pet to see him placed in a more suitable setting.

I have seen many of his brothers and sisters in the deserts and mountains of the Southwest but never one as healthy and beautiful as this guy! You are right, a magnificent coat.
