White Sands Monument and Bisti

These are the results of a recent Friends of Arizona Highways workshop centered on White Sands Monument in New Mexico. There were a total of 6 people on the trip with all of them avid photographers. This made things a bit nicer in that everyone was willing to getup at stupid hours of the morning to get the shot. The Professional leading us was George Stocking and is recognized for being able to "deliver the light".

We had three special treats.

1) We got in 2 hours early for Sunrise.

2) It was flooded with water 6"+ deep at the bottom of all the dunes creating beautiful reflections.

3) Great light.

4) Oh Yea. I got Carded to buy Beer;-)

As always, if you like the images, please vote and/or leave a comment in the hopes that others will also then see them. But in all, the flood from the moonsoon and fall rains made this trip an A+.

Lovely!! I lived in Las Cruces way back in 5-6th grade. These make me want to go back with a grown-up camera (i'm pretty sure i have some Polaroid's!). Thanks for sharing - I can't wait to show my Dad.

No color filters were used in the creation of these images. All of these were taken with the EOS 5D shot RAW and processed with DPP (mostly) and one or two with C1 Pro. In DPP, the Landscape Picture Style was used. WB was set to Daylight only. There are a few that used a Graduated Neutral Density (gray) filter to help balance out the sky brightness and the ground brightness. The filter was applied digitally.

Steven, these are wonderful! I hate the word "nice"! What a marvelous experience to be there during "the flood", and you have captured it so beautifully. I am torn between the two sunrise pond images, but probably will have to favor "Second Sunrise". Your classic "Lone Yucca" is outstanding. As always, it is a joy to view your work.
