Ship Rock : Columns

Ship Rock, NM

You get up late (actually didn't but we had one alarm not go off in the group) and you rush out to find something to add to the picture. What I found were these columns of granite sticking up from the ground. Ship Rock is the core of an extinct Volcano (million of years dead). The soft ground has eroded away leaving the hard granite core sticking 600 meters into the are. In this part of the field, there are granite columns sticking up from the ground representing old lava tubes and off-shoots of the original lava vents.

You can always catch up on sleep and, on this occasion, the early riser was handsomely rewarded. Lovely shot.

A very appealing image with strong composition and subtle colours. Congratulations Steven. - Best regards from Richard

The soft colouration is most appealing, Steven. I've stood there many times, and never captured those colours.
