FOR PETE AND PETESIE
(something tells me that neither one of you will see this post)

I've envied you both your caterpillars for a long long time.
I bemoaned the fact that despite my vigilant searching, I never before saw one in person.
On the weekend that all changed as I saw them feasting on the decaying milkweed.
I think this one munched my exif

Now then, can anyone tell me why they have antennae on both ends?
Camouflage perhaps?

It is fantastic in black and white and so glad you got to see one and you certainly made the most of it! I think I'll have to look up and see the reason for the antennae, but your guess of camouflage sounds right to me. Outstanding, Liza, and thank you so much for including me. Made my day.

I've long wanted to see one of the dramatic creepy crawlers myself but still have not. What's fascinating to me is that these creatures which seem made for the technocolor treatment are equally if not more impressive in black and white. If, that is, a talented photographer frames just the right macro DOF she claims to not be her forte! ;-)
