Philetairus socius, Sociable Weaver

Kalahari Gemsbok Park, South Africa

A colonial bird of arid acacia savannah and semidesert with scattered Quiver Trees. Confined to Namibia, southern Botswana and north-west South Africa. Each colony builds communally a nest mass mostly on a dead tree, an acacia or a Quiver Tree. The nest mass consists of several nest chambers, but the center of the mass is often held as a roosting or nesting place by a Pygmy Falcon and in certain cases by a Barn Owl.
