These are the main PBase servers.
There are another 13 servers that live in other locations doing jobs including jpeg webserving, dns, mail, and backups.
More details on the servers at
These machines are mostly Dells, Intel PIII and Xeons, running Redhat Linux.
The Dell Powervaults are the primary RAID storage.
All of this will be improved over time for increased capacity and stability. Just a matter of cash.

You have a very cool job, Slug. It's good to know that PBase is being taken care of because I so much love this site (all the wonderful pictures in here). Thank you! :)
What would PBase be without you guys.. Thanks for all your hard work! Keep it up!
how cool is this?! glad you shared.
Some current photos and updated information on the About PBase page might help a lot of people understand and appreciate the complexity of the system nowadays, especially in light of some of the current problems. I'd be curious myself about how much data PBase is managing nowadays. Many of us struggle with the small personal systems we manage. Something like keeping PBase humming puts things in perspective now and then.
And to think that my first hands-on machine was a 12-bit word PDP-8 with 8k of iron-core memory, a word-addressable 256k 128 fixed-head hard disc, two 131k fixed-block-addressable DEC-tapes, an extra Teletype, and a single dial-up modem. I am impressed.
Congratulations. It is a pleasure to know the creator of this site, that so many satisfactions it gives us.

I really love pbase. It is very fast and reliable.
cool gallery! It's nice to see where it all happens. I've only been here for a month, but I'll be around for a long time to come - and I'll be referring many more! Thanks for all the hard work! -Jim
Thanks for the oportunity to use this wonderful site.
pbase is the best!
In reply to Mike Morgan.
The PBase servers live in a facility that provides the space, power, cooling, and network connection.
So yes, there are huge banks of batteries that can power the entire data center long enough for the diesel generators to take over.
Quite a success story for you. Great job. Often at some customers I see power source backups like a UPS battery system or something else. Does pbase require this for the servers?
the left cabinet now has two more x-serves and two more x-serve raids.
they act together as the primary copy of images. this is where your uploads go.
the x-serve raids in the right cabinet are the secondary mirror of the images.
the disk arrays in the third cabinet used to be the primary copy, but now are part of the secondary mirror.
all together, there is about 40-50TB of raw disk space.
there are eight 20amp circuits providing power to these machines.
what do those apple x-serves do?
impressive setup :)
Slug, you are doing an amazing job, Pbase is that much fun!
nothing wrong with a Dual 700
for the first year and a half, PBase ran entirely on a dual 350Mhz PII which i still use as a desktop machine.
These make my Dual Intel PIII 700MHz server look like nothing! It's amazing to think these hold pbase!
Blimey. What a set-up. Great to see the nuts and bolts of the system. Cheers and thanks. Keep on keeping on.
From Kenneth in Hong Kong, this is lovely!! I am also a nerd base 10 yrs ago when I was in UK!! I will support pbase starting from me and my son (little baby of 19 months old)
How cool is this, to think that my photographs are stored in there!!
PBase is great!, Thanks JARO, JILL, JILIK, JOGO, JAMA, JENKI, JINKO, JOBI, JACK and JIKI.. Well Done.
