Their Desperate Search for the Holy Grail 05_19_07.jpg

Last weekend was the Miata's in Moab event that Wanda hosts and has spent the last two years planning. Well before sunrise on Saturday I took a small group out to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park.

The sunrise shot of Mesa Arch is a landscape classic. Photographers come from all over the world to take the sunrise photo. I have photographed Mesa Arch hundreds of times. With all those photos I have never really captured the magnificence of the sunrise here. Really none of the images I have seen from anyone else really captures it either.

But like these photographers we continue to try.

One thing this photo really does do is show what the light streaming through Mesa Arch is like at sunrise. You can see that magic hour light reflected by the red sandstone cliffs and rocks bellow on the underside of the arch and the fronts of the photographers.

It really is a magical place that we can never capture but we won't give up trying.

Probably more magic here than in the phenom itself. I can truly feel the excitement and hypnotic affect of the legendary light. And, there is just enough 'magic-hour' light to give us all confidence that - it is so. Great shot - g

Bill, this is a wonderful image that combines photojounalism and landscape photography. The warm glow from the sunrise is beautifully captured on the interior of the arch. The detail in the sandstone is great and adds a lot of texture to the image.

If a killer rabbit comes flying out of that arch, they'll all be sorry!
