California Condor7 04_23_05a.jpg

Wes and I just returned from our "Three Days of the Condors" trip. It was a success. We found California Condors, one of the worlds rarest birds, each day. In 1982 there were less than 25 California Condors. There are now 244 California Condors world wide with the majority being held in captivity in zoos. The wild population was 106 birds on April 1, 2005. 53 in Arizona, 20 Southern California, 33 in Central California. 27 more birds are awaiting release. http://www.peregrinefund.org/condor_factsheet.asp

Seven, a five year old male, has a wing span of about 9 feet. This isn't a crop. His wing tips went from one side of the frame to the other.

Condor 7 meets Rock Wren is a blending of two photos taken a half hour apart. I hadn't moved the camera so putting the two shoots together to give you an idea of size was easy. Rock Wrens are about 5-6" tall or about the same size as a sparrow.

This condor spent all afternoon perched on this rocky point. Here he is leaving just after sun down.

Number 27 soaring far above our heads

Well, Wes took a picture of our location and setup. It gives you a good idea of how much 600mm pulls things in.

Great shots Bill, but it's no surprise that they're so rare. Just look at their face, how would you like to wake up in the morning and look at that...

The numbering system is interesting.
Just like sports players.
Great shots.

Great shot looks like you completed your goal. And you got Luck 7 to boot!

Wow! Look at the wingspan on that bird! Excellent catch. DOF is just right. And you had great light for it.
