On August 20, 2007, Eric Beck and I found this swallow at the Red Slough WMA in extreme southern McCurtain County, Oklahoma. This location is about 50 miles north of known Cave Swallow breeding colonies in northeast Texas. This swallow superficially resembles a Cave Swallow yet also has some Cliff Swallow characteristics. It has been suggested that this bird is a Cliff/Cave hybrid. It has also been suggested that the bird could be a "Southwestern" Cliff Swallow, variant "Mexican" Cave Swallow, "Carribean" Cave Swallow, and even variant "Northern" Cliff Swallow. We welcome comments on this bird, especially if you have experience with any of the species & races mentioned above.
