Point Lobos State Reserve is a protected but publicly accessible area just south of Carmel. The hiking is easy and the trails wind through rocky beaches, coves, and natural gardens. At certain points along the seaside trails, sea lions can be seen on the rocks just offshore. The water is clear enough to see them swimming underwater.
