This is an attempt by an adult Bald Eagle to steal the younger eagle's fish. I saw this happen in February 2006 at Citie Point, Hopewell, Virginia and the outcome was the same.

Must have been an amazing experance considering size wise this is almost like looking at 4 ironing boards with 2 mail box-sized bodies. Ive seen some raptors do the oposite an toss prey to each other during nesting season--and once saw a Sea Otter on its back toss something to a gull out on Shimya Alaska, but never had this sort of photo luck or skill. My 7-yr old son wanted me to let you know that this series is commonly known as the "Fish Pass." The younger bird is an immature bald eagle. This is a natural behavior. The adult hunts fishes on the river, while the young birds (usually 2) come and get the meal. It saves the parent back-and-forth flying. He LOVED the photos, and his favorite raptor is the Bald Eagle!

Once the young eagles leave the nest they are pretty much on their own. Plus, that immature eagle appears to be two to three years old (notice the white on the tail)I think and they migrate away from their parents their first winter.

That is an immature bald eagle. They don't get the white head and tail until they are about 5 years old.

Superb action pics! - the sequence is stunning - but are u sure it's a 'steal' instead of a 'handoff'? Here in london we had a nesting pair of falcons, and when the chicks were just starting to fly - the adults handed off food to thier offspring in this manner. thanx heaps for the opportunity to see this. adrianox

Can you give us more information about the lens that you used for these shots? (I can see it was "700mm" in the EXIF data, but what 700mm lens?) Anyway, great shots.
