On Friday, October 4th, 2002, Boeing Toronto was kind enough to hold the 45th Anniversary of the Avro Arrow roll-out in 1957 ~ a proud moment for thousands who contributed to the development and production of this great Canadian aircraft. Here are pictures of some of the hundreds who attended this ceremony at the original A.V. Roe Canada plant in Toronto (Malton), Canada.

This is rather weird but my grandmother passed away about 2 years ago and I was just sitting here and decided to google her name, up comes this website with a picture of my grandparents John and Joyce Wolstencroft. My grandmother is gone and my grandfather is slowly getting worse with Alzheimers but I remember back to being a kid and hearing all about how he worked on this plane, my Dad heard it enough that he is now an Engineer as well! This made my day, seeing her reminds me of what I used to have..WOW

Dear Sandra, Desmond Todd was my father in-law, he was a very talented, smart man but also very humble especially when it came to his role in the making of the Avro Arrow he was one of the engineers on the team. The one person he did like to tell his stories to was his only grandchild my son Trevor whom extremely close with. My husband, son and I moved out to Alberta 13 yrs ago and spoke to him every Sunday as we were a close knit family unfortunately he passed away suddenly nine days before my sons wedding it was very hard for us but we took solace in knowing he was doing his second best love next to the Arrow and that was fishing. It wasn't till after going through his things that we really knew the full extent of his contribution to the Arrow thank you so much for this great picture that you took of him my son printed it and had it framed and hung it next to his pictures of the Arrow that his papa gave him. My Dad came from Scotland in the early 1950's and went to work with A.V. Roe. After that, he went to work for Ford Motor. He talked about the Arrow for year after year after year. Now that he is gone, I am finding all this information so fascinating. I wish I had paid more attention.

Thank you so much for these pics here and info....my Dad used to work at the Orenda Engines back in the late 1950's and I remember as a child about my Dad speaking of the Arrow.....as an older agult now,I find this very interesting,as my life was affected by the cancelation of the Arrow project. I think this was a beautiful and a spectacular piece of aircraft,and it was a shame to end the work on it .....our government made a wrong choice when they scrapped it!!!

Carol, thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately, all these buildings have now been demolished - A.V.Roe aka Boeing Canada is now gone. The original hangers are gone, the office building is gone. You might want to contact the folks athttp://www.avro-arrow.org/ and see if they are planning anything for the anniversary. Cheers, Sandra

Sandra, thank you for collecting and posting these great photos. It is now January 2007 and I am also wondering if there are any plans for celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary - it is just 13 months away now!

Thanks Roger. I've gathered these pictures from different sources, but the photos of the 45th anniversary are my own. Boeing is shutting down the whole plant this July, and all buildings will be demolished - such a sad ending to a truly great moment in history.

Sandra this gallery is great. My father worked on the Aero and I remember the stories about how great the plane was and the devastation the cancellation of the program caused. Where did you get the old photo's?

Sandra, I have just had the first opportunity to view your website and all of the photographs are just great. They bring back many memories.
