State Funeral for Peter Casserly - Fremantle, 1st July, 2005

A State Funeral was held today for Western Australia's last World War I veteran. Mr Casserly was 107 and was only 19 when he joined up. As of this writing, I believe there are only 2 surviving WWI veterans left in Australia. Update: ANZAC Day 2007, there are no more surviving diggers from WWI.

It was a gloomy day at St Patrick's Basilica in Fremantle, but perhaps that was appropriate.

An update: I was contacted by Mr Casserly's family and I have provided them with prints of these images as well as copies of the 40 or so others from the day. It's the least I could do (my local lab, Perth Camera House, assisted with the cost).

I read about the passing of Peter Casserly in our local newspaper. I truly appreciate your posting the photos of this event. We must never forget.

Thanks John. I was lucky enough to be on my last day of a weeks holiday, so I couldn't really not go. I was a little disappointed at the smallish crowd, but I guess that's a bit par for the course these days.
