Mt. Ord road takes off from Highway 87 north of Sunflower, Arizona. It goes to the top of Mt. Ord where there is a fire lookout tower. On the drive up we found lots of flowers to take pictures of. An exciting discovery was something I'd never seen before, a beautiful, yellow-flowering shrub. I found out what it is: Flannelbush - Fremontodendron californicum. I may have seen it before, but would never have paid much attention to it if it wasn't flowering. At the top, near the gate we found quite a few of what we believe are Doubting Mariposa Lilies - Calochortus ambiguus. They were very pretty, some a pale purple, almost white, others darker, more purple. At lower elevations we found some Opuntia engelmannii that had very large, golden-colored floweres. We didn't get to go up the lookout tower because the gate was locked.

Mt. Ord - memories of Arizona. I've lived "back East" for forty years now. On the week when my mother died, 1974, my father and I drove to the top of Mt. Ord as we were reflecting. Great country. Good pictures and memories. Thanks
