Steve Wolniak

These are some of my images with the SD9. I have reloaded my original Day Lily images, but I have either not performed any additional sharpening, or I reduced sharpening as indicated in the legend for each image. All of these pictures were shot with ambient sunlight, and I used a tripod to stabilize the camera. I have found that the 105 macro EX performs best in the f8 to f16 level. Resolution is degraded at higher f-stops, presumably because of diffraction spot capture problems with smaller apertures. My only major adjustments to the images involved resetting the white balance. I performed a few modest changes to contrast, and to intensity levels for shadows and highlights, all with the intention of maximizing dynamic range. The new images were shot in the spring of 2004 with the 105 mm EX. The lily was the first of many to appear in my garden, and was the first shot taken with the 28 mm EX lens. A trip to Charleston SC netted the photo of the gaslight, also shot with the 28 mm EX lens. The original microscope images were obtained by attaching the SD-9 to a T-mount port (Pentax K bayonet) of a Zeiss Axiovert. Later, I fabricated my own T-mount adapter, using the Sigma SA lens mounting plate. To resolve the images properly from the microscope, I inserted a Sigma 1.4 X teleconverter between the microscope and the camera body. Most of the microscope images were made from commercially prepared specimens. The fluorescence image came from a slide available from Molecular Probes (Eugene, OR). The diatom images came from slides made and marketed by Carolina Biological Supply Co. The buccal cells came from my cheek. The paired images of Surirella demonstrate the default sharpness setting available in Sigma Photo Pro.
