Thingvellir is graben between the gorge Almannagjá and the gorge Hrafnagjá. This picture shows the begining of the walkpath down into the gorge Almannagjá. Today there is a man-made walkway down there at the top because this place is always changing.

Some years ago there was a road there but then we had some big earthquakes and then some small gorges opened up and a part of the road fell into them. So in in order for it to be safe for people to continue walking down into the gorge this man-made walkpath was built.
