This was the weirdest sequence of behaviors I've ever seen. The bird on the left came to "feed" the 2 young birds on the right. The bird on the left is a fledged Great Blue Heron from this year and it I guess came to try to steal food from the birds in the nest. The older bird went through the actions of feeding young, except its bill was closed almost the entire time (in all 35+ picts I have of the sequence, the bill is only open partly in 1 and fully open in 1). The young birds thought they were going to get fed and were very excited, but they got nothing. The older bird stood in the nest for 3-4 minutes after the "feeding" episode.

See later sequence of a Great Egret feeding young and you can see fish being passed to the young. I saw no food in any of the picts in this sequence. Humm...
