New Zealand - South Island - 2005

It was for a good reason that Peter Jackson chose his homeland to shoot Lord of the Rings. We went to find out! What a photogenic country. The skies and lakes needed no enhancement. They were brilliantly blue (when it wasn't raining!). We mainly had good weather and plan to return to do the job properly. These shots were taken with my Canon 20D and mainly with my Canon 17-40 f/4 L. Click on small thumbnail for enlargement.These images have been uploaded in very low resolution. Great shots here Sheila! I am off to South Island (kinda like my hometown - lived in Chch for 6 years) in 2 weeks, and was fearing that once I get there, the 17-40 wouldn't give me enough WA on my 10D. Did you find that 17mm on 1.6x was enough for the landscapes? Let me know. Ezekiel

Yes, I am very impressed with Sheila's work. She is very talented and has a great eye. I hope to one day see and take a few photographs in the same places, but they probably won't look quite a nice as hers. Sheila, you are an inspiration for me. Also thank you for being so kind.

Great, great, GREAT photos... I always had a fascination about NZ. Part of it because it is the farthest place I can travel to on this Earth and also because I had a suspicion the scenery would be just glorious. That last impression has been further etched with scenes from LOTR and photos such as yours. Now, If only we could go there before I'm old and senile, with hands shaking so badly no IS will be able to compensate...:) PK

Thanks so much for these - brings me back memories of the 6 years I lived in Christchurch. During that time our family travelled the South Island twice - but that was before I picked up photography. Will definately go back and come back with ten thousand photos!

My wife and I just returned from NZ a few weeks ago and would return there at the drop of a hat. Your photographs do justice to a wonderful landscape. A stunning gallery as usual Sheila. I agree, it is not difficult to see why Lord of the Rings was filmed there.
