23 February: Old Books

Continuing the theme I seem to have this week of old things which I will never throw away...
These are five books given to my Uncle in 1909 and 1910 for placing very highly in the Sheffield Sunday School Union Scripture examinations. He would have been 12 and 13 respectively.
He and my aunt, my mum's sister, didn't have children of their own and I was given the books when I was quite young.
I have to admit that although I read 'The Heroes' many times, to my shame I have never read any of the others, although obviously I have seen TV adaptations/films of the novels by Charles Dickens.

My father had a similar set of those, and another of the Alexandre Dumas novels. They were all a great form of escapism in the days before he finally relented to get a TV set. I too still have some of them.

Very nice. I have a small number of bird and butterfly books dating from the 1910s/20s that were my Dads. He has told me not place them with just any seller should I want to get rid of them. But for now I keeping them!

Funnily enough, the Kingsley is the only one I've read, too (albeit a very long time ago...). Just can't get into Dickens -- although I love Wilkie Collins.... Beautiful objects; lovingly photographed....

They look to be in such good condition for 100 year old books. Very nice a picture too.

Oh these are truly lovely. I have a real thing for old books, especially ones with dedications on the fly leaves. As for Dickens, my advice is give them a go. I know they look daunting because they are all so long but I ALWAYS take a Dickens on holiday because they are such good reads. They're exciting and moving once you get into the language but that only takes a few pages. I've read lots of his books and there hasn't been a single one I didn't thoroughly enjoy.
